WHAT IS THE GREAT 100?
Since 1989, The Great 100 has celebrated Registered Nurse excellence across the state of North Carolina. The Board is proud to support this mission and invites you to join us in honoring the vital contributions nurses make every day. The Great 100 is recognized statewide for its commitment to elevating the image of nursing by recognizing excellence and supporting nursing education through scholarship funding.
The Great 100, Inc. is a grassroots, peer-recognition organization dedicated to honoring the nursing profession in North Carolina by:
- Recognizing the importance and impact of Registered Nurses across diverse practice settings
- Promoting a positive image of nursing as a profession
- Annually honoring 100 North Carolina Registered Nurses who demonstrate excellence in practice and a strong commitment to their profession
- Providing scholarship support to advance Registered Nurse education in North Carolina
The Great 100 began in the summer of 1988 when Registered Nurse Heather Thorne convened a group of nurses from across the state to develop a program to recognize outstanding professional achievement and contributions to community health. Modeled after a similar initiative created by nurses in Louisiana, her vision was to celebrate nursing excellence while raising funds for nursing scholarships.
Since its inaugural celebration in 1989, The Great 100 has awarded thousands of dollars in nursing scholarships. Nursing schools and programs are selected to receive scholarship support on a rotating basis, ensuring broad impact across the state.
**NOTE: The North Carolina Great 100, Inc. recognizes Registered Nurses in North Carolina.
